Employment Law Update Focus of Next VIA Business Luncheon
Businesses can take steps in the workplace to help ensure legal compliance and avoid costly fines or litigation
VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA (February 3, 2009) — Failure to comply with recent changes in federal and California employment laws can be costly to businesses. Attorneys David Poole and Brian Koegle with Poole & Shaffery, LLP will present a California legislative update and review new laws that took effect in 2009 at the next Valley Industrial Association luncheon on Tuesday, February 17 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Valencia Country Club located at 27330 Tourney Road in Valencia. Recent passage of new laws reflect changes in wage claim releases, exemptions for computer professionals, and text messaging. Poole and Koegle will review recent California case law pertaining to meal and rest periods, non-resident employee compensation and non-compete agreements. Federal law updates on recent changes to the FMLA requirements, mileage reimbursement rules, revised I-9 authorization and GINA will also be discussed. The February luncheon is sponsored by College of the Canyons and includes an overview of the community college. The business luncheon is open to the public. Cost is $40 for VIA members and $50 for non-members. Reservations for the February 17 luncheon should be received by Thursday, February 12 and can be made by calling VIA at (661) 294-8088 or by visiting www.via.org.
