Santa Clarita, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2009) — Clinic construction has begun at 23772 Newhall Avenue, the future home of Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers Inc.'s Newhall Health Center location. The new health center will include five exam rooms (including two larger rooms for treatment such as prenatal care), two dental operatories and an office for counseling sessions. For the first time, affordable dental services for SDFHC patients will be provided at the Newhall location. The health center will be located in the Stagecoach Plaza. All services will continue to be available on a sliding fee schedule.
Currently the Newhall Health Center occupies a space at Newhall Elementary School on 11th Street, donated by the Newhall School District. For years the SDFHC board has wanted to expand the capacity to provide a greater scope of services to even more residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, specifically in the Newhall area, and in 2009, this dream will become a reality.
"We are extremely eager to get the construction at the site completed and to begin to offer comprehensive services at the new Newhall location," said Cheryl Laymon, executive director of Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers Inc. "This is a huge step forward, and it will allow us to provide even more needed services, such as dental care and mental health services, to our patients. The Newhall Health Center will truly offer comprehensive, integrated health care aimed at the priority needs of our patients."
SDFHC Board President Ed Bolden echoed these sentiments. "With the new Newhall Health Center, SDFHC's dream will be realized. We will be able to expand our services to residents who truly have nowhere else to turn to for health care. This expansion will make our organization even more viable in the future."
Under the leadership of Chris Ball, Building Chairman, the contractor selected for the tenant improvement project is Howard Pointer of Here's How Construction. The contract was signed December 30, 2008. Work began in January and is expected to be complete in spring 2009.
SDFHC gratefully acknowledges the support of the following foundations and organizations that have helped make the dream of our new health center a reality: Ahmanson Foundation, California Wellness Foundation, Kaiser Foundation, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Weingart Foundation, Los Angeles Supervisor Michael Antonovich and Rosalind Wayman, CDBG and the City of Santa Clarita.
SDFHC operates three health centers in the Santa Clarita Valley — Canyon Country Health Center, Val Verde Health Center and Newhall Health Center — as well as outreach sites at College of the Canyons and California Institute of the Arts. SDFHC offers a full range of health care services — physicals, immunizations and vaccines, screenings and diagnostic tests, well baby care, and family planning — to those who may not seek health care elsewhere. Patients pay based on their income. This past year, SDFHC provided service for 8,000 patient visits.

SDFHC was established in 1980 and named for long-time Val Verde resident and minister, the late Reverend Samuel Dixon. A not-for-profit community health center, SDFHC serves the greater Santa Clarita Valley, and is governed by an 18-member board of directors, all of whom are Santa Clarita residents. The mission of SDFHC is to enhance wellness by providing quality primary health care services and health education to unserved and underserved residents, with a special emphasis on serving the uninsured. Easily accessible services are available for the entire family in both English and Spanish. Medi-Cal, Blue Cross and Healthy Families are all accepted, and a sliding fee scale is offered, keeping health care affordable for all. Services are available at the Val Verde Health Center (661-257-4008), the Canyon Country Health Center (661-424-1220) and the Newhall Health Center (661-291-1777).
SDFHC receives United Way funding and is supported by countless individuals as well as corporate sponsors who help make affordable health care possible. Tax-deductible contributions are welcome.
