Man Arrested After Early Morning Crash
Sunday, February 15, 2009 — 2:15 a.m. — Canyon Country
A suspected drunk driver was arrested early Sunday morning as he attempted to walk away from a violent car accident in the 17300 block of Sarita Avenue, Canyon Country. Deputies arrived at the scene and found that a vehicle, reportedly driven by Anthony Hardy, M/20, of Canyon Country, was traveling westbound on Sarita Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver apparently lost control, struck the curb, a mailbox, and an unoccupied parked car.
Two passengers in the vehicle, female age 18 and male age 18 of Canyon Country, sustained moderate injuries during the collision. The female was trapped in the car and had to be extracted by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. Both victims were transported via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition is not known, but the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
The driver, suspect Hardy, was not injured and was detained nearby as he attempted to walk away from the accident scene. Deputies reportedly found indications the suspect was apparently driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on a felony charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and a misdemeanor charge of Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail pending future court proceedings.
"This accident should serve as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with drinking alcohol and driving," said Captain Anthony La Berge of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. "We are very fortunate a young life was not lost this past weekend," he added.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Traffic Office is continuing their investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident should contact Detective Smoldt of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 799-5111 or report tips anonymously as indicated below. -ref 02914
