Oregon Health Care Administrator Named Chief Executive of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center
MISSION HILLS (March 10, 2009) — Larry Bowe, an administrator with Providence Health & Services operations in Oregon, was named chief executive this week of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
Bowe, currently chief executive of the Providence Yamhill service area in Oregon, which includes Newberg Medical Center, will take his new post April 20.
"I'm thrilled to be part of this team," Bowe said Tuesday. "It's definitely an honor to work with such a high functioning group at one of the best hospitals in the country."
Bowe said he also looks forward to moving to "sunny California" and to taking over the leadership of the expansion of Providence Holy Cross. He's particularly pleased that the four-story patient care wing is LEED-certified, as is Providence Newberg, meaning construction and operations meet national standards for environmentally friendly features.
Bowe comes to the 254-bed Providence Holy Cross just weeks after the medical center's victory before the Los Angeles City Council, which will allow construction of the new 136-bed expansion to resume. Providence Holy Cross, ranked among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation, is renowned for nursing excellence and for its trauma center, which next month celebrates its 25th anniversary.
"Providence Holy Cross is very fortunate to have a man of Larry Bowe's caliber take over the reins," said Kerry Carmody, the hospital's former chief executive, who late last year was promoted to chief operating officer for Providence operations in California.
Bowe, who has been with Providence for nearly 14 years, is known for his hands-on approach to management and has a track record of developing good working relationships with employees and physicians.
Under Bowe's leadership, Providence opened the nationally recognized Providence Newberg Medical Center in 2006. Previously, he had served as chief executive at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, also in Oregon, helping transform patient satisfaction scores there from the bottom 5 percent nationally to the 96th percentile. That hospital also experienced a complete financial turnaround, moving from a deficit to a profit, with patient and physician satisfaction rates growing to be among the highest within the Providence system. Trained as a lawyer, health care is a second career for the married father of five.
Bowe grew up in Parkdale, Ore., near Hood River, and attended Lewis and Clark College where he played football and baseball. After receiving both his undergraduate and law degrees from Lewis and Clark, he returned to Hood River to practice law. After 19 years as a lawyer, he returned to school and earned a master's degree in health care administration from the University of Colorado Denver.
"Larry's experience, enthusiasm, dedication and energy will be great additions to Providence in California," said Russ Danielson, vice president and chief executive, Providence Health & Services in Oregon. "His ability to inspire people will serve him well in this new role."
