Henry Mayo Earns National Recognition For Organ Donation Rates

Cynthia Hartman, RN, clinical care coordinator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), was selected by Henry Mayo leadership to attend the Fourth National Learning Congress on Organ Donation and Transplantation held Oct. 23-24 in Nashville, TN and accept the recognition award on behalf of Henry Mayo.
VALENCIA, CA (February 6, 2009) — For the third year, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has been awarded the Medal of Honor by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for achieving top organ donation rates.
Henry Mayo was one of 23 Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) member hospitals to receive the prestigious award at the 4th Annual Organ Donation and Transplantation National Learning Congress in Nashville on October 24. Statewide, only 63 hospitals received the award.
"It is always an honor for nurses to work with families that choose to donate their loved one's organs to other patients in dire need," said Dee Rickett, RN, MSN, director of critical care services at Henry Mayo. "Families that make this decision are often comforted that their loved one may actually save someone's life. To be part of that circle of life is very rewarding for the nurse."
To win the award — which is handed out by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services — the hospital achieved a life-saving organ donation rate of 75 percent or greater in a 12-month period. During the recorded period August 06 to July 07, Henry Mayo's conversion rate was 77.98% with 7 organ donors out of 9 eligible.
"We're honored to receive this recognition again this year," said Roger Seaver, president and CEO of Henry Mayo. "But the real heroes are the individuals who choose to give the gift of organ donation."
Presented in partnership with OneLegacy, a nonprofit organ and tissue recovery agency serving Greater Los Angeles, the Medal of Honor award is part of the Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative, an HHS initiative launched in 2003 to save and enhance thousands of lives annually by spreading best practices to the nation's largest hospitals. Since the program was launched, U.S. transplants and organ donations have increased significantly.
Individuals wishing to make the commitment to become a potential organ donor can register online with OneLegacy at www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org its Spanish-language counterpart, www.doneVIDAcalifornia.org, or it can be designated on your driver's license.
