Lundin Named New COC Women's Soccer Coach
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — College of the Canyons has appointed former women's assistant soccer coach Justin Lundin as the new women's head soccer coach.
Lundin becomes the women's head coach after three years as an assistant under Marcellin and will be only the second coach since the women's soccer team was started in 1998. He has coached at the high school, club and AYSO levels and is currently leading the Santa Clarita Valley Magic Soccer Club team.
"Justin has been with the women's soccer program for three years and we are very happy to have someone who has a rapport with the team and can hit the ground running," said COC athletic director Chuck Lyon.
Lundin earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and is working toward his master's in kinesiology with an emphasis in sport pedagogy at California State University, Northridge.
The change comes after Phil Marcellin, who was hired as the women's coach in 1998 and who has coached the men's and women's soccer programs simultaneously since 2003, decided to focus his attention solely on the men's program.
"Coaching two intercollegiate teams is a big job, but especially when both teams compete at the same time of year," said Lyon. "Phil has done a good job as the head coach of both teams, but with the squads frequently competing on the same days, at the same time — and often at different locations — the logistics became too difficult for one person to handle."
Marcellin held a 123-89-36 record during his 11-year tenure with the women's team, which included four conference championships and five appearances in post-season play. He finished the 2008 men's season with a 42-69-20 record during his six years with the team.
