City Tunes Up for 6th Bike to Work Day Challenge
Gather Up Coworkers and Leave the Car at Home!
The City invites residents to participate in Santa Clarita's 6th Annual Bike to Work Day Challenge on Thursday, May 14. Several local businesses are already geared up to compete in the free community event, which corresponds with the state-wide Bike to Work Week, the biggest bicycle commute in California.
The Bike to Work Day Challenge is a friendly competition among Santa Clarita businesses to see which employer can get the most employees to bike to work on May 14. There are three categories of competition: small business employers with 2-10 full-time employees, medium business employers with 11-100 full-time employees, and large employers with 100 or more full-time employees.
"The City's Bike to Work Day Challenge gets the community involved in making a positive impact on the environment through amicable competition," said Councilmember Bob Kellar. "In addition to significantly lowering auto emissions in the City, the event promotes the healthy lifestyle for which Santa Clarita residents are known and utilizes the City's more than 30 miles of off-street bike trails."
The businesses with the highest participation rate in each category will win free frozen yogurt for all participating cyclists from Valencia's Golden Spoon. In addition, all Bike to Work Challenge participants are eligible to win great raffle prizes from the City. Cyclists can also pledge with Metro to bike to work on May 14 and win prizes from their raffle giveaway, including an electric bike, REI gift cards, resort tickets, wireless bike speakers, restaurant gift cards, and more. To pledge with Metro, visit www.metro.net/biketowork.
Santa Clarita teamed up with Metro, the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition, and Newhall Bicycle to host four bicycle pit stops, open from 7-9 a.m., where cyclists can stop for refreshments and receive giveaways and information on cycling on their way to work. The pit stop locations are as follows: in front of City Hall at 23920 Valencia Blvd, Bouquet Junction (corner of Valencia Blvd & Bouquet Canyon Road.), the Trail Access at the corner of Newhall Avenue and 16th Street (hosted by Newhall Bicycle) and Trail Access at the corner of Camp Plenty and Soledad Canyon, hosted by the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition.
In addition, Santa Clarita Transit will offer free bus rides to cyclists on Bike to Work Day, Thursday, May 14. Cyclists just place their bikes on the bike racks on the front of the bus, show their helmets to the bus drivers when they board, and relax and enjoy the free ride.
For more information on Bike to Work Day, including pit stop locations and how to get your business involved, please contact the City's Environmental Services Division at (661) 286-4098 or visit santa-clarita.com.
