Santa Clarita Continues to be a Cleaner, Greener City
Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduced, Air Quality Improved and More
Since Santa Clarita's City incorporation in 1987, the City of Santa Clarita's partnerships with the community have resulted in numerous environmentally conscious policies and programs that benefit residents and businesses. The City's efforts are integrated throughout every City department, but are reinforced through community support and willingness to implement "environmentally sustainable" policies.
The City works hand in hand with residents and the business community to create and implement "green" practices. Some of these include: the holiday tree collection and recycling program, free recycling for City-based businesses, the annual Household Hazardous Waste collection program, the free curbside used oil pick up program, four free large item pick ups annually for residents, and the City's water conservation program are just a few examples of how Santa Clarita continues to support sustainability and environmental protection.
City facilities have, in recent years, undergone significant energy retrofitting, saving 439,000 kilowatt hours of energy and 350,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Santa Clarita's irrigation controllers are also being retrofitted with state-of-the-art equipment that uses real-time weather information that adjust to current conditions to determine exactly how long to run sprinklers.
The Transit Maintenance Facility served as the first high-quality project- constructed with state-of-the-art energy efficient and sustainable building methods, it is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified building in the City. The structure exemplifies the City's commitment to green development and responsible public policy.
For more than 20 years the City of Santa Clarita worked to maintain a "green" and healthy community, and received a number of rewards for its efforts. In 2008, the South Coast Air Quality Management District presented Santa Clarita with the Model Community Award for the City's innovative and progressive approach to improving regional air quality.
