Special Screening of "Against the Tide" at COC to Commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day
SANTA CLARITA, CA — Jews across the world will observe Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 21. Known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, the annual observance commemorates the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In Israel, it is a national memorial day, and is observed by Jews the world over.
To commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day locally, College of the Canyons, in conjunction with Congregation Beth Shalom of the Santa Clarita Valley, and iACT@wiesenthal.com - campus outreach, invites you to attend a special screening of "Against the Tide" on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at 12 pm at College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355. The screening will take place in the student center cafeteria. Parking is available in the two lots directly off Rockwell Canyon Road that are adjacent to to the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman, "Against the Tide" is a compelling documentary which highlights the struggles of young activist, Peter Bergson. When he challenges the Roosevelt Administration and the Jewish Establishment, led by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, demanding that the rescue of Europe's Jews become the American Jewish community's top priority, he meets shocking and increasing resistance. Bergson's experiences are juxtaposed with those of European and Polish Jews who had complete faith that their American brethren would be able to save them any day now.
Due to the subject matter and graphic depictions of the events surrounding the Holocaust, this screening is strongly recommended for those high school age and up. Light Refreshments and a Q&A session will follow the screening. Facilitating the program will be Dr. Patricia Robinson, Dean of the Social Science and Business Division, and Rabbi Aron Hier, the Director of Campus Outreach/iACT@wiesenthal.com for the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Rabbi Hier is a strong advocate for Israel and a natural catalyst for Jewish pride. He has traveled far and wide in the name of Jewish programming, including trips to Croatia, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Hungary — even Hawaii.
For more information about this screening, please contact Gary Jacobs at (661) 713-1087.
