Man Suspected of Stealing from Unlocked Cars
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 — 2:33 a.m. — Canyon Country:

Commit Crime? Not in the Santa Clarita Valley — Resident's call leads to apprehension of theft suspect — An early morning phone call to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station by an alert Canyon Country resident led to the arrest of a suspected thief Wednesday.
The resident spotted a man entering cars in the 18000 block of American Beauty Drive. Deputies quickly responded and set up a containment which proved successful after one of the deputies spotted the suspect more than a block away. The suspect was reportedly riding a Razor scooter in the darkness around several streets and trying door handles on cars until he found one unlocked. Deputies report he would then take whatever he could find of value from inside the cars.
Deputies recovered several items which they suspect were stolen from cars in the area including, sunglasses, a DVD player, and jewelry.
The suspect, Ricardo Cortes, MH/25, of Canyon Country was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of Reasonable Cause Receiving Stolen Property and a misdemeanor charge of Petty Theft from unlocked vehicles. He is being in lieu of $20,000 bail pending future court proceedings. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. -ref 12515
