Local Business Will Hold Fundraiser to Benefit Fallen Sheriff's Heroes
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Jersey Mike's Sub Shop located at 18635 Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country will hold a fundraising event in support of the children of two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department heroes who were taken from us in 2008.

When Chris Irons, owner of the Jersey Mike’s Subs in Canyon Country, decided to give something back to the community, he was not thinking small. He thought that it would be a touching tribute to honor and remember two fallen members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in an effort to show appreciation and offer support to the men and women who protect our homes and businesses every day.
"Every day, brave deputies and their support staff keep us from harm and protect our property," said Irons. "I have a lot of respect for what they do, and give them all the credit for making Santa Clarita a safe place to live and work."
As part of the "Heroes Tribute" event, Jersey Mike’s Subs Canyon Country location will be donating 15% of the total proceeds from all sales on March 25th to the families of two Sheriff’s employees that were tragically murdered last year.
On Saturday, August 2, 2008, twenty-seven-year-old Sheriff's Deputy Juan Escalante, was shot and killed in front of his mother's house in Cypress Park at approximately 5:40 a.m. as he was leaving for work. Deputy Escalante had been employed with the Sheriff's Department for approximately 2 ½ years and was assigned to supervise some of the most violent inmates housed in the County's Mens Central Jail. He was also a military veteran who had served in Iraq. Sheriff Lee Baca described Deputy Escalante as "dedicated and hard-charging in the best sense of the word. He lived up to the dream of service in country, serving his county and honoring his family." Deputy Escalante left behind a wife and three young children.
On Saturday, December 20th, 2008, Adriana Pizarro, a Sheriff's Department records clerk, was killed while standing on the front doorstep of her mother’s home in South Los Angeles with her young niece after returning home from a day of Christmas shopping for her family. She was the victim of a stray bullet fired over 150 yards away during a senseless gang shooting where a second victim, 23 year old Alexander Castro was killed. Pizarro, 34, worked at the Compton sheriff's station for over 10 years and was known for her uplifting personality and her caring for her friends, family and community. She was a single parent that leaves behind a one-year-old son. "Mrs. Pizarro died because of a gang shooting out on her street," Sheriff Baca said. "She didn't have to die, and this is the kind of senseless violence we are working to stop however we can."
Funds raised from the event will be given directly to the families of Juan Escalante and Adriana Pizarro to help support those children left without their parent. Thank you for helping us pay tribute to our fallen heroes.
